Allow microphone access when prompted, then play one open string at a time. The tuner shows the note it hears and whether you are flat, sharp or in tune, so you turn the machine head until the reading settles in the centre. Work across all six strings, then check them again.

Standard tuning from the thickest string to the thinnest is E2, A2, D3, G3, B3 and E4. The tuner recognises these targets automatically, so you simply play a string and adjust it until the display reads in tune.

Pitch detection needs a clean single note. Background noise, other strings ringing, or a very quiet signal will make the reading unstable. Mute the strings you are not tuning, play closer to the microphone in a quiet room, and let the note ring rather than plucking repeatedly.

The tuner detects pitch generally, so it can help with other stringed instruments such as bass, ukulele or violin, but the on-screen targets are laid out for standard six-string guitar tuning. For other instruments, use the detected note name rather than the string labels.

Check your tuning every time you pick the instrument up, and again after playing for a while, since strings stretch as they warm up. New strings in particular need retuning frequently for the first few days until they settle.
