Set your tempo in beats per minute with the slider or the plus and minus controls, choose a time signature such as 4/4 or 3/4, and press start. The metronome plays a steady click with an accented first beat of each bar so you can always hear where the bar begins.
Choose the fastest tempo at which you can play the passage cleanly, not the tempo the piece is marked at. If you are making mistakes, drop 10 to 20 BPM. Once you can play a passage correctly several times in a row, raise the tempo by about 5 BPM and repeat.
The time signature sets how many beats fall in each bar and therefore where the accented click lands. Use 4/4 for most pop and rock, 3/4 for waltzes, and 6/8 for compound rhythms. Hearing the accent on beat one helps you keep your place in the music.
